When moving to Tasmania from Overseas or other parts of Australia, you want to make sure to choose the right removalists as there can be a few hurdles to overcome in a process. We are sure that you are very much excited about moving to Tasmania, so we will ensure that your removal experience is problem free and just as pleasant.

Before you embark on your journey, here are few things you might like to know about Tasmania.

Van Diemen’s Land

Tasmania packs an enormous amount into its compact frame – with the important exception of people. Giving visitors a chance to get away from it all is the key part of its appeal.

It may look like stray punctuation trailing off the edge of Australia – indeed, careless cartographers have on occasion neglected to include it – but Tasmania makes a compelling case to be a priority for travellers, whether they come from overseas or across the Bass Strait. Mainland Australia has scale, but most of it is endless stretches of empty, infertile outback. Tasmania, on the other hand – comprising less than 1 percent of Australian landmass, crams a great deal into a small space.

In this island half the size of England (but with a tiny fraction of the population) there are lakes, mountains, an abundance of ancient rainforest, beaches, surf and elegant towns and villages. Many of the later are throwbacks to the time, some 200 years ago, when as Van Diemen’s Land, Tasmania was one of the first parts of the Antipodes to be colonised by the British. Wander around Hobart, Launceston or, especially, some of the settlements on the Midlands Highway connecting those cities, and the sense of Victorian England transported across the world is irresistible. It is to the visitor’s advantage that economic boom largely bypassed the state, leaving so much of that history intact.

More important still is Tasmania’s reputation as a place of phenomenal natural beauty. The attractions of Cradle Mountain, Freycinet National Park or the southwestern wilderness are just the beginning. Follow any road and be opened to serendipitous discovery: a tumbling waterfall, an alpine tarn, perhaps a million-year-old rainforest. Allied to the glorious environment, there’s something about the way of life that draws people back once they’ve made that first visit.

The Geographic Portrait

A mosaic of landscapes, Tasmania is famed for its natural beauty. Pristine temperate rainforest, dramatic coastlines and unique flora and fauna are all features of this isolated southern land. Most of Tasmanian land is not populated – much of it being stark wilderness: rugged hills, surging rivers and dense forest made it inaccessible, and unsuitable for settlement.

Hobart, the capital (population approx. 200,000), is one of the world’s most southern cities – only Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin in New Zealand are comparable. In terms of size, Tasmania’s 68,332 sq km roughly equates to Sri Lanka or around half of England, and amounts to less than one percent of the total area of Australia.

There are regions of rich farmland and pasture, but overall flat land is in short supply in Australia’s most mountainous state. The wildest area is the west and southwest, much of which is preserved within national parks.

Tasmanian Climate

The southerly location and the influence of the ocean means that Tasmania is considerably cooler and rainier than the rest of Australia. However, summers are still warm and mostly sunny, with heatwaves bringing temperatures over 30 degrees celsius for short periods, particularly in the north. Late summer usually brings the most prolonged spells of good weather. Winter can be cold, and snow is common on higher ground.

How to get there

Moving to Switzerland can be organised quickly and efficiently with a quality removalists such as Nuss. As overseas moving is rather delicate and time consuming undertaking, Nuss has a dedicated consultant for overseas moving and vast experience in preparing and executing such moves.

Geographic Profile

From the snowbound Alps and verdant Jura mountains to the more densely populated plateau of the Mittelland that lies between them, Switzerland offers a wealth of different impressions. It has no coastline but the shimmering waters of its large, clean lakes amply make up for this. Picturesque mountain villages and atmospheric medieval towns of its remoter areas contrast with the cosmopolitan cities of Bern, Zurich, Lausanne, Lucern and Basel. For many, the Alps, which offer unrivalled skiing and other winter sports, as well as a pristine natural environment, are the country’s greatest attraction.

About two-thirds of Swiss territory consists of Alpine and sub-Alpine areas. At lower elevations up to 1500 m (5000 ft) agricultural land and deciduous trees predominate. These give way to coniferous forest, which above 2,200 m (7,200 ft) in turn gives way to scuba and alpine pastures.

While snow and rainfall increase with altitude, the Alpine climate is affected by two seasonal winds, the cold, dry easterly “bise” and the warm southerly “Fohn”, which brings clear, sunny skies then rainfall to the western Alps.

National History

The history of Switzerland began in 1291, when three small cantons formed an alliance against their foreign overlords, the Habsburgs. As other cantons joined, the alliance expanded, but there followed centuries of instability, with bitter conflict between cantons and religious groups. It was not until 1848 that a central government was established and modern Switzerland was born.

The Swiss Economy

The swiss economy is based on banking and international trade, the service industries, manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. Standards of living are high, unemployment is low and per capita income is one of the highest in the world. The country’s major exports are precision machinery, clocks and watches, textiles, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Chocolate and dairy products, including cheese, are also major exports.

Although only 5 per cent of the population is engaged in agriculture, this sector of the economy enjoys a privileged status, with some of the highest subsidies in the world. This is not only of benefit to farmers but, since it contributes to the preservation of Switzerland’s picturesque landscape, it also supports the country’s hugely important tourism industry.

Art and Science

A highly cultured country, Switzerland plays a leading role in the arts, hosting such important events as the Lucerne Music Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Rose d’Or television awards. Art Basel is the world’s premier contemporary art fair, and the Kunsthaus in Zurich is a national art gallery with collections of international importance.

Swiss Cheese – the national icon

When thinking of Switzerland, most people would associate 3 things with this great European nation – clocks, chocolate and cheese. Of course there are many others, but these three “swiss made” icons spring to everyone’s mind at first, and rightly so. If you are an cheese connoisseur, you will most likely know that Switzerland is justly renowned for its cheeses, which range in taste from mild and nutty to rich and spicy. Cheese is simply a way of life in Switzerland and half of their milk yield goes into the making of cheese. One of the county’s greatest exports, it is also an important part of the Swiss economy.

Don’t settle for a “cheesy” moving service

As a part of the global removalist network, Nuss can ensure the best quality, complete door-to-door International removals to Switzerland with additional services available if required. Our state of the art storage facilities in Melbourne and Sydney can provide short or long term storage for your precious belongings if you require additional time to relocate. If you want your move to feel like a piece of (chocolate) cake with a swiss-like punctuality and precision, get your quote from Nuss today.

International Removals to Germany are best best organised by professional, quality removalist company. Nuss can provide a full door-to-door removal service to Germany via either sea or air, as well as packing, insurance and other additional services.

Germany is not only blessed with varied and beautiful scenery, but also has a multifaceted history. A rich tapestry of historic buildings, significant art collections and fascinating towns and cities – all characterising this culture-rich European nation. Today, the New Germany has much to offer an open-minded visitor – from breathtaking Baltic Sea shores to the north to skiing and hiking in the Alps, as well as culture of every kind in the great city of Berlin.

Germany is divided in 16 administrative regions, some of which are city-states like Berlin and Bremen, while others like Bavaria cover hundreds of square kilometres. Some 130 years after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck brought the German states together, regional identities remain strong and distinctive local traditions and accents are still present today as before.

Geographic Landscape

With an area of 356,978 sq km (137,829 sq miles), Germany is one western Europe’s biggest countries. It is about 450km (280 miles) at its widest and some853 km (530 miles) long, and it has 907 km (564 miles) of coast along the North and Baltic seas. Germany shares a border with 9 other European countries: France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark.

North flowing rivers delimit large stretches of both Germany’s western and eastern borders, while the Bavarian Alps mark the country’s southern edges. Along the western border is the Rhine valley, whose steep castle-topped banks are the quintessence of Romantic Germany. The Schwarzwald (Black Forest), Swabian, Harz and Bohemian ranges are all lower than the Alps, but are still high enough for a variety of winter sports.

German Culture

In the fields of the visual arts, classical music and literature, Germany has been at the forefront of European artistic life for centuries. Aristocratic patronage enabled artists such as Albrecht Durer (1471 – 1528) and Matthias Grunewald (1470 – 1528) to flourish. Contemporary German artists and musicians are following in the footsteps of a wealth of illustrious predecessors. The country’s role as a leader in the modern art world is confirmed by the Kassel Documenta, the Art Forum Berlin and the Kunstmesse Koln, which attract international artists.

As a part of international film scene, the Berlinale Film Festival is the third biggest in Europe (after Cannes and Venice), and brings 16,000 industry professionals from more than 100 countries to Berlin each year. The Golden and Silver Bear awards are much prized, and recognition in Berlin often means further commercial and artistic success.

Fun and Festivals

Germans like to enjoy themselves. Of all the stereotypes about Gemany, the image of a serious and angst-ridden nation is farthest from the mark. Although a deeply conventional streak runs through society, this is more than balanced by an equally strong interest in creativity, counter-culture and sheer fun. Throughout the country, the year is punctuated by great popular festivals that are as lively today as they ever were.

When talking about German festivals, it’s impossible not to mention the great Oktoberfest. It’s the Big Daddy of beer festivals: 16 days of frothing beer mugs, fairground rides and concerts. Munich’s Oktoberfest began as a celebration of the future King Ludwig’s wedding in 1810, and has grown into the world’s largest party, with 6 million visitors descending on 14 beer tents in the Bavarian capital.

Nuss will move you to Germany quickly and safely

Don’t know where to start? We suggest you pop up your favourite “Pilsner” or take a sip of that divine “Schnapps” and give us a call. With a huge amount of experience, impressive track record and outstanding quality service, Nuss is obvious choice for people who want a worry-free International Removals to Germany.

Moving overseas to Japan is a significant task, and if you are planning to undertake such move you should brace yourself for a life changing experience. Understanding Japanese lifestyle and culture is by no means easily accomplished task and it will take time to adapt to this unique place and its society.

When it comes to overseas removal service and shipping your belongings to Japan, at least you will have no surprises – Nuss International Removals can take care of that part and provide you with a perfect peace of mind. Here are few interesting thoughts and facts about Japan:

A truly unique place

Some see the Japanese turning into Westerners, others see a Zen-like serenity. The reality is a bit more complicated.

When confronted with the army of men in suits and proliferation of fast-food franchises everywhere, one can see obvious influence of Western world and might think that Japan has become like the West. The near-cult status of Western pop icons and use of English loan words in daily conversation may lead the outsider to believe that Japan has changed dramatically.

Although Japan derives most of its modernity from the West, the Japanese continue to cultivate a self-image of an almost divine uniqueness. The Japanese repeatedly refer to Japanese things – including themselves – as “special” or “unique”. The special Japanese snow once kept out French skis, as did special Japanese digestive system keep out American beef.

Japanese are very proud of their country and the sophistication and depth of its heritage. As an island nation, Japan is often focused inwards, as when the evening television news leads off with a cherry-blossom story and the remainder of the world is shoved to the end. Japanese people are more appreciative of the subtleties of the changing seasons than any other people. Rural people will know if the dragonflies that appear in late spring are three days early this year, or if “tsuyu”, the rainy season, is dragging on two days longer than normal.

Japanese Climate

As soon you land in Japan, you will realise that people are simply obsessed with talking about weather. As a matter of routine, people nearly always greet each other by commenting on weather, and changing seasons still attract a great deal of attention by media and television. If the cherry blossoms are 3 days late this year, that will be a major news story on all TV channels.

Japan’s seasons are very similar to those of Europe and North America. The coldest months are December, January and February where on one side (Sea of Japan) Hokkaido and Honshu experience heavy falls of snow as the cold air from Siberia moves in. The Pacific Ocean side, by contrast, is very dry during the winter months. Winter water shortages are now becoming a serious problem in Tokyo.

Only in Japan

Capsule Hotels – this unique concept of accommodation will provide the cosy feel of weightless cell similar to the Apollo space shuttle to some, or the ultimate claustrophobic nightmare to others. The “room” is approximately 6.5 feet long and comes with heating / air conditioning, TV, radio and alarm clock. Conveniently located near key stations, the Capsule Hotels are primarily used by stranded people who were not planing on spending the night away from home. You will either love or hate these coffin sized rooms, but there are definitely something to talk about.

Vending Machines – they are commonly found everywhere in the world, and the concept itself is nothing new. Why would they deserve to be mentioned then? Well, when it comes to vending machines, Japan has taken the concept to entirely different level. Not only that Japan has the most vending machines per capita in the world, but also the variety of items these machines come packed with is unprecedented. From disposable underwear, shirts and ties, to live crabs and everything in between. What is also amazing that the vending machines are also found in country side as well as in the cities, and they are rarely vandalised or dysfunctional.

Best Family Attractions

Kiddyland in Aoyama district of Tokyo features 5 floors bursting with toys and characters like “Hello Kity” and “Pokemon”. Time spent here with kids could leave you with a acute cash flow problem.

National Children’s Castle – Extensive facilities for young children in Tokyo’s Aoyama area. Playhouses, a music room, a huge jungle gym and much more. Easily designated a full day for activities.

Sony Building – Older kids will want to check out the latest gadgets, especially those on 6th floor devoted to the Playstation only.

The USA comprises 48 states of the continental US, plus the huge state of Alaska and the volcanic islands of Hawaii. There are also the US territories, which include Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Midway Islands and the US Virgin Islands.

As the words to the anthem go “land of the free and the home of the brave’ there can be little doubt that the flag of the United States is still to this day a powerful symbol of nationhood, unity and of freedom. “All men are created equal” said Thomas Jefferson, a great American hero and ex President and as far as modern day America is concerned those words still apply.

The USA has some of the most vibrant and diverse cities in the world; New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, the list just goes on.
The same goes for tourist attractions; the sunshine states of California, Florida and Hawaii, the natural wonders of the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Yosemite Park and we cannot forget the man made attractions such as Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood. With all this on their doorstep, it’s easy to understand why most Americans have never bothered getting a passport.

Americans are a truly proud and nationalistic people – self critical, demanding, determined but homely, warm and friendly at the same time. Few can argue that, although things may be tough at the moment, the “American dream” still exists and the nation has a vibrant heart that keeps pumping a positive and creative attitude towards life.
Hamburger, hotdog, ball game, these are simple words that immediately conjure up images that identify the USA and traditional US values. But in reality the USA is more connected with immigration and people that came from every corner of the world to find their fortune or to escape poverty.

The USA is a simmering melting pot of migrants that searched for opportunity, a new life and freedom. They found this and quickly moulded the country into becoming the “engine room” of the world populated by a proud people who have never forgotten their roots and “old country cultures”. In fact they have adapted these values into a modern society that adds a vibrant and ethnic flavour to many American Cities.

Nuss Removals provide a full door to door service to the USA, with the option of either a Sea or Air service. Our partners around the world are the most reliable and professional available and are selected by Nuss based on their service capability and track record. Supported by the very latest in technology, our move coordination staff will guide you through the moving process and be available for you every step of the way and for overseas removals Nuss has a variety of Insurance options available.

Moving overseas alone can be a very stressful experience at the best of times, but if you add the factor of moving with children then you have a whole new set of challenges to deal with.

Nearly everyone that you speak to who has experienced an overseas moving with children will have an opinion as to the best way to go about it. Their advice may be good intentioned but perhaps its not necessarily what’s best for you. So lesson number one, certainly take on board other peoples experiences but seek advice from professional companies too.

A professional advisor, such as a child psychologist, may well be worth a visit as they would have assisted thousands of clients and will therefore have a much broader awareness of the processes and what strategies you can adopt as a parent.

There are certainly differences in the process based upon the age groups concerned. Teenagers will have a very different set of concerns than kids in the eight to twelve age group. That said, each will be just as important and the sensitivities are no less – just different.

Communication:

Thankfully, with all the social media means available to us these days, there is no excuse for not being able to keep in touch. By this we mean with family and friends before, during and after the moving process. Communication can be split into:

- Immediate family
– Extended family and friends and how to keep in touch

Immediate family

It is generally agreed that everyone in the immediate family circle, including the children, should be included in general discussion about the move. No need for Mum and Dad to have the children involved in some of the more complex and detailed discussions of course ie the job, the package, etc but they should certainly be involved in the lifestyle and daily living discussions, school options and anything else that specifically involves them. In other words, don’t hold back anything if you don’t have to and make sure there are no surprises!

The real benefit to the family communicating to this extent is that it is a great way to uncover any anxieties that the children may have and to be able to offer answers and reassurances to their questions and concerns.

Extended family and friends

A common concern when moving great distances is of course the leaving behind of family and friends. This is one of the greatest challenges to overcome.

Thankfully technology has advanced so much to the point that no matter where in the world you may be it is a simple process to invite family and friends into your social network scene visually, live and interactively. This is probably one of those rare occasions when you should encourage your children to communicate via some of the many social networking sites available or even setting up a family website.

Again, it’s all about reassurance and communicating. Being so far away does not mean “out of sight out of mind”, it’s just a question of being in touch in a different way.

Get the children involved

It is considered a good idea to have the children participate in the packing process – let them pack some of their soft toys or books for example. Many kids have been known to think that as the removalists packing teams place items inside cartons then that’s it…they will never see those things again. Having them involved and explaining that those items are only on a journey and that they will be at their new home wherever that may be is a great reassurance.

Moving Overseas Main Concerns

So often in life it is the fear of the unknown and the fear of failing that generates anxiety within us. Many studies have uncovered that these same fears the driving force behind some of the major concerns that children have when moving overseas.

Here are three of the top documented concerns:

1) Leaving family and friends behind
2) Fitting in and making new friends in a new Country
3) Doing well in their new school and even finding the right school

Each of these concerns are clearly understandable, each one will however have its own strategy requirement and can be overcome through communication, sharing and reassurance. The key is recognising the concern and developing a plan of action in advance of the move to deal with each one.

Here are a few tips on each:

1) Leaving family and friends behind

Many families have found that organising a goodbye party can really help. Not only does this give a real personal chance to say goodbye but it can also be a great reassurance in that it is an opportunity for the “friendship group” to throw ideas around on how to keep in touch, using the moment as a positive step forward.

We have already mentioned social media but as a reminder blogs, family websites, skype, facebook, etc are all great ways to keep in touch regularly and “live” so to speak. They can also be fun.

2) Fitting in and making new friends in a new Country

This is actually more of a pre departure concern and that in reality it is one of the easier concerns to overcome. Most schools will have experience in integrating newcomers especially if your child is enrolled in one of the international schools. If this is the case then there will be plenty of other children that have shared the same experience and will therefore have much in common.

Parents can definitely help with breaking the ice socially – encourage your child to invite a few friends home for after-school tea or play. See what extra activity groups the school may have and enrol your child in something that interests them.

If you are moving to a non English speaking country, study the local language together and get some lessons organised. Every little aspect of cultural awareness and language skill will assist and be viewed as a positive by the locals. There are also many organisations that provide cross cultural training so it may well be a good investment to get some coaching before you move.

3) Doing well in their new school and even finding the right school

Typical concerns about schools include the curriculum, the general teaching methods used, how many children are usually in a class, what language is used, how do breaks and the lunchtime routine work? These are all valid concerns and should be researched in advance so that your child is prepared and aware of the system as much as possible. Remember, no surprises!

It is highly recommended that you seek the advice of an international education consultant who will have access to all of the information you are looking. This type of professional advice and guidance is invaluable and is by far the best way to understand and be briefed on the local education system at your destination. They usually provide a school search and placement programme too.

Summary

As you can see, communication, research and planning are three critical areas in which to direct your effort in making the move with and for your child a more smooth and pleasant experience. We encourage you to call your local Nuss Relocations office for further advice and information on our own relocation assistance service.

The purpose of this article however is to provide you with food for thought and a few ideas on how to move forward as a family on the move. Each situation will be different and therefore we have tried to provide as much general advice as possible.

This article is work in progress and more and more information will be posted to it over time. We therefore encourage you to share you personal experiences with us so that others may benefit from them.

If you have some good practical advice or personal experience that you believe others would benefit from please submit this by email to: info@nuss.com.au and use the subject line “moving overseas with children”.

Moving overseas is always a big undertaking, but when you’ve got a beloved pet coming too it becomes even trickier. Organising for your loyal canine or eccentric feline to join you on your international adventure is easier said than done. Moving to another country involves dealing with a new set of laws and strict regulations relating to the transportation of animals.

Contact the local consulate: All pets travelling overseas must fulfil the requirements of the Government of the receiving country of destination, these requirements vary. The first step is to contact the consulate of the country that you are moving to. They will be able to tell you what kind of paperwork you need for your pet and whether your pet will be welcomed into the nation that you will be living in. The consulate will also be able to tell you what fees you may be required to pay. Be aware that some countries may require your pets to be quarantined for a period of time and the consulate will be able to advise you on this. It is always important to start your research early as some countries require the process to begin many months ahead of travel to ensure all their government requirements are met.

Veterinary: Make sure you have the correct documentation prior to your pet’s trip. You will require vaccination records for boarding and relevant veterinary documentation for International shipments.

Different Cultures: You are moving to a different environment from what you and your pet are accustomed to. Some countries have different attitudes towards animals kept as pets, so familiarise yourself with the local customs. You may want to investigate the cost of veterinarian bills in your new country, as this differs from country to country.

Flights: Check with your airline and ask them to give you a copy of their regulations regarding flying your pet overseas. Every airline embraces the opportunity to help with your personal travel arrangements but they may not have the same attitude when it comes to making arrangements for your pet. Note that the number of pet containers allowed on an aircraft is limited. There are many flights, particularly on the weekends or early in the morning, when the service is not available. Avoid disappointment by checking availability for your pet on the flight before confirming your reservation.

Returning Home: When planning the outward part of your move overseas it is a good idea to check and ensure that your pet can eventually re-enter Australia at the end of your stay abroad. Animals to Australia must meet all of the AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) import conditions prior to export. This is to minimise the risk of exotic diseases being introduced into Australia which is free from many animal-related diseases found in other parts of the world.

As you can see, moving with pets can be complicated and time-consuming. Taking all this in to consideration and wanting the best for your pet, a better option is Nuss Relocation. Nuss have the experience to guide you through the journey from start to finish, making sure that your moving overseas with pets will be as safe and secure as possible.

For those of you who are moving to Singapore, you might find following information useful. Singapore is a wonderful example of how east can meet west. Strategically located and with excellent facilities many multinational companies have made Singapore their chosen area for region head quaters in south east Asia. Singapore has fascinating cultural contrasts, excellent shopping facilities and numerous tourist attractions which contribute to its success as a leading destination for both business and pleasure. A very popular destination to move to, Singapore will provide even the most experienced expatriate with a unique and pleasurable place to live.

Ask a Singaporean “what is the national sport” and in most cases the answer with be ‘Food”! The cuisine is superb and has developed as a result of Singapore’s multicultural roots and eating out is very much a daily event.

Whether you are moving your entire household or just a small shipment of effects only, Nuss International Removalists will provide a full door to door removal service to Hong Kong with the option of either a Sea or Air service.

Situated on the edge of mainland China, Hong Kong is a territory that connects two worlds. A capitalists dream come true Hong Kong is now part of the world’s largest Communist country, there is no place quite like it. Since the handover in 1997 Hong Kong has become a ‘Special Administrative Region of China’ and is no longer part of the British colonial past.

Hong Kong is a shoppers paradise. The array of shopping malls, first class accommodation and a world class transportation system make it the perfect gateway for travellers to Southeast Asia and China, providing a smooth transition from west to east. As one of the key economies of the Pacific Rim, Hong Kong Island is a gleaming landscape of skyscrapers, a business icon and one of the most exciting and dynamic plots of land on earth.

Hong Kong consists of four sections: Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands. Kowloon and the New Territories form part of the Chinese mainland to the north of Victoria Harbour. Hong Kong Island, containing the central business hub, lies on the southern side of the harbour facing Kowloon. The Outlying Islands comprise a composite of 234 islands.

The “Manhattan of Asia” and where “east meets west” are both valid descriptions of this exciting and vibrant territory. It really is a unique place. The stunning views across Victoria harbour and from the lookout point at “The Peak” provide a spectacular panorama and a great place to watch Hong Kong’s magical day time to night time transformation. During the daylight hours you will be mesmerised by the never ending hive of activity of a city metropolis; with street traders and powerful financial giants working side by side creating together what we know as entrepreneurial Hong Kong. Then at night a new Hong Kong of lights, noise, action fragrances and food bursts into life like no where else in the world as the social scene takes over – 24 hours in a day is just not enough for Hong Kong!

Living in Hong Kong does have its challenges though. Housing is expensive and tends to be smaller than many expatriates are used to, the hustle and bustle is not to everyone’s liking, summer can be very hot and sticky while winter can be very cold and damp. That said there is so much to like about the place thanks to its resourceful people who are loaded with personality, a colourful culture and an overall life experience that is hard to top. In general terms medical facilities are modern and world class, there are a wide range of international schools providing a very high standard of education, public transport is second to none and all in all Hong Kong a very safe environment, even late at night.

Our International Removals crews are fully trained and we use the very best in packing materials for the ultimate protection of your belongings. Our shipping services to Hong Kong are available for any type or size of move and our coordination staff will be able to give you full details of what shipping options are best suited for your particular move.

If you are moving to UK, Nuss can provide you with a full door to door removal with the option of either a Sea or Air service. Our packing crews are fully trained and we use the very best in packing materials for the ultimate protection of your belongings. Whether you are moving your entire household to the UK or just a small shipment of effects only, Nuss will be able to assist you. Our shipping services to the UK are available for any type or size of move and our coordination staff will be able to give you full details of what shipping options are best suited for your particular move.

UK Background

The United Kingdom (UK) comprises the countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each of which has a rich cultural heritage and an abundance of historical interest.

London is by far the UK’s biggest city. It started as a small Celtic village on the river Thames, was populated and developed by the Romans and eventually grew in prosperity and global importance through the medieval period onwards. In particular, the Victorian era can be classed as the city’s “golden age” and in contrast the blitz of WW2 was one of its darkest hours.

That said Londoners dug deep and in true form and with bulldog spirit, London moved on and experienced a new cultural renaissance in the swinging 60’s when once again it took pole position as the “Fab” place to be.

Today, London remains a magical city and deserves its reputation as being one of the truly great cities on earth. If you happen to be moving to London, you may well be in for the time of your life!

It would be wrong not to mention some of the other wonderful UK cities: Manchester, Liverpool (home of the famous band The Beatles), Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast and more; our apologies to those that we have not mentioned. Each one of these cities deserves its own overview as they are all magnificent in their own right. Alas though, we have to make specific mention of the Channel Tunnel as this is now a main gateway and entry point to mainland Europe. To be able to get on a train in central London and just a few hours later disembark in central Paris is remarkable and has changed how people view continental travel.

Although the UK is a member of the EU, it is not a part of the Euro Zone and therefore all standard day to day financial transacting is conducted in UK currency (Pounds Sterling) and not Euros.

From a political perspective, although the UK parliament in London is still the dominant political centre, both Scotland and Wales have a greater degree of independence through the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff. This was a huge step in recent political reform.

General points

The UK media have a reputation for quality but also for aggressive reporting. The media are free to report on all aspects of British life, society and political opinion without constraint. The variety of publications available certainly reflects the full spectrum of political opinion and many newspaper shops sell European papers daily.

Business hours vary depending on location and sector but here is a general guideline:

Banks: Monday – Friday, 09.30 – 4.00pm or 5.00pm. Some main branches are also open on Saturday 09.30 – 1.00pm.
Post offices: As above
Shops: Monday – Saturday 09.00am to 5.00pm (5.30-6.00pm in major cities). Sunday, some larger stores open 10.00am -4.00pm.

Drive on the left side of the road in the UK, the use of seat belts is compulsory, give way to vehicles from the right on a roundabout or at junctions, crash helmets must be worn on motorcycles or pedal cycles.

Football is the most popular sport (although more people go fishing than play football but thats another story) and is the one that draws the largest regular weekly crowds. The UK is home to the English Premier League, comprising some one of the worlds most respected and followed clubs in the game.

Cricket (of course), Rugby, Tennis, Hockey and a variety of other sports clubs and facilities are readily available in all regions and local communities. Horse Racing and Greyhound racing is also very widely followed.

UK Culture

It is worth remembering that the terms ‘English’ or ‘British’ are not exactly the same thing. ‘British’ is a broader term and refers to a person from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales; whereas to be ‘English’ specifically refers to someone from England. Likewise, those from Wales are ‘Welsh”, ‘Scots’ are from Scotland and if they are from Northern Ireland they are ‘Irish’. It would be wise not to refer to someone who is either Welsh, a Scot or from Northern Ireland as ‘English’ as this may be offensive.

The UK Class system is still very much a part of everyday life but it has certainly changed over the years. It was once all about a combination of wealth, breeding, “which school do your children attend” and where “one lives”. A true “Brit” could sense a persons class through their accent, manners, dress and deportment.

These days there is a far greater distribution of wealth and the class system, although alive and kicking, is less dominant. The British are still known to be a very reserved and private people and questions relating to a persons financial situation or relationships should be avoided.

We can’t have on overview of the UK without mentioning the all important Pub Culture. The “local” as it is known is still to this day one of the most important social meeting points in UK society. Nearly everyone has there favorite local Pub and in some of the smaller country villages it is the focal point for all of the events and festivities throughout the year.
